Dermot O’Brien has always been interested in the possibilities of materials and objects that have a generative and poetic potential. Objects that generate light or heat or sound or have other properties. He intentionally incorporates into his work the most ordinary or utilitarian items, things that are not initially culturally loaded. The work often juxtaposes polar opposites; darkness/lightness noise/silence. Many pieces deal with language and codes and layers of meaning. Dermot’s interests also extends to the relationship between art, science and nature. Materials are core to Dermot’s practice.
